New Hampshire State Council on the Arts
Catherine O'Brian, AIE Coordinator
Arts in Education Program
The State Arts Council is a publicly funded agency within New Hampshire's Department of Cultural Affairs.
Funding comes from the state of New Hampshire and the National Endowment for the Arts.
This program serves schools (public, pre-K-12) and alternative education sites for special needs students, cultural organizations with arts education programs for schools, community service organizations that provide arts programming, individuals trained to implement arts education programs, and professional artists interested in working in educational settings.
The program seeks to encourage the study of the arts by these students, help them develop arts literacy and lifelong skills that enhance their innate creativity and ability to make critical evaluations, and provide tools for better communication. Among its goals are: the promotion of the arts as basic to education; the development and strengthening of programs in arts education; deepening the understanding of and appreciation for the arts in schools and communities; and assisting in the development of new strategies in arts curriculum development and implementation. The program also solicits cooperation with other arts education agencies and organizations through partnerships to better meet the needs of schools throughout the state, builds support for arts education with educators, public policy makers and the general public, provides opportunities for professional artists to work in educational and community contexts, and opportunities for students, educators, parents, and other community members to enter into creative dialogue with professional artists and one another through the arts. The Arts in Education program supports programming that both reflects the cultural richness and traditions of New Hampshire and draws from the diversity of cultures throughout the world.
Grants include the Artist in Residence (AIR) Grant, $1,000-$5,000, and three new grants: the AIE Planning Grant, $500- $1,000; Arts in Education (AIE) Leadership Project Grant, $500-$5,000; and the Principal's Fellowship in Arts Education, $500-$1,500 award.
Services provided include an Arts in Education Roster of professional artists who work well in schools, training workshops for artists, parents, and teachers, an annual Arts in Education Conference, site visits by the AIE Coordinator to artist residencies and culminating events, and presentation by the AIE Coordinator to faculty, school boards, PTOs, organizations, and others interested in the benefits of strong school arts programs, and planning, consulting, technical assistance, and resources.

Description: This new program will provide New Hampshire principals with opportunities - through grants, technical assistance, and public recognition of excellence in leadership - to achieve the following arts in education goals: make the arts basic to the education of children and young adults in grades pre-K-12; increase the public awareness of the value of arts education for children and young adults; and enable individuals and organizations, particularly artists and arts organizations, to increase arts education opportunities and/or improve the quality of arts education.
Important to achieving these goals is the ability of school principals to grow professionally in their knowledge of arts education. With funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and the State Arts Council, we hope to foster the leadership and professional development of principals in our state. Working in cooperation with the the New Hampshire Association of School Principals, the Principal's Fellowship Program will build the capacity of principals to: respond and exchange information; increase individual and collective knowledge and skills; and initiate strategies to advance arts education in their schools.
This grant permits flexibility in designing proposals that meet the needs of NH school principals. Principals' Fellowship grants may be used for professional development, principal exchange, short-term consultancy, and principals' regional meetings. Arts education curriculum design and research/assessment in an integrated approach to arts education may be combined or singled out for the total amount requested. Proposals may be made to support ongoing research in arts education or implementation of pilot arts projects or school-wide initiatives.
