The NH Alliance for Arts Education, the only statewide arts advocacy group that represents the full range of arts disciplines (dance, music, theater, visual arts, literature, etc.), represents a creative community of more than 500 members. NHAAE is a member of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education and receives funding from KCAAEN to advocate for arts education.

Eleventh Annual Integrated Arts Conference at Silver Center, Plymouth State University in association with the NH Alliance for Arts Education, Plymouth Writing Project and the Arts Alliance for Northern New Hampshire. Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network Leadership Conference, Washington, DC - Laura Hutchins, President will represent NHAAE at this annual event.

 

April 1:

NH Young Writers Conference at New England College, Henniker, NH. This annual conference convenes high school students and teachers in a daylong conference to discuss the literary arts. Professional writers and creative writing teachers present workshops to share ideas on writing fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

News from the year 2005 at NH Alliance for Arts Education:

 

            Lexmark donated printers and educational software to New Hampshire public schools, The New Hampshire Alliance for Arts has partnered with Lexmark to ensure that New Hampshire public schools are able to benefit from the donation program. NHAAE sent every public elementary, middle and high school information about the donation. Lexmark's philanthropic program donating art educational software, supplemental lesson plans and Lexmark printers was offered to more than 500 public schools throughout the state – valued at more than $70,000. Thank you to Laura Hutchins, President of NHAAE for coordinating the donation program.

               Thank You !! to Mary Lee, former Executive Director of NHAAE for her devoted years of service. She has moved on to new horizons.

               Thanks to Janet Curcio-Wilson for her guidance and service to the Board of Directors of the NH Alliance for Arts Education.

NHAAE EVENTS for 2005:

January 29:

The 10th Annual Integrated Arts Conference was held at Silver Cultural Arts Center. We rang in the New Year by continuing to partner with Plymouth State University. This year, NHAAE board member, Randy Armstrong was a featured performer in the Educational Theatre Collaborative production: ANASE the Spider Man and conducted workshops: African Heartbeat with Afro-Caribbean dance instructor, Anna Consalvo. Concurrently, the Integrated Learning Project Conference at Plymouth State University coordinated by Marcia McCaffrey and the NH Dept. of Education was attended by NHAAE board members: Janet Curcio-Wilson, Laura Hutchins and NHSCA Arts in Education Coordinator, Catherine O'Brian.

 

 

March 26:

National Arts Education Conference at Hines Convention Center in Boston, MA was attended by NHAAE board members, Marcia McCaffrey and Laura Hutchins.

 

April 14:

Video Conferencing Workshop at SERESC in Bedford, NH on reviewing technologies for learning through Video Conferencing was attended by NHAAE board representatives, Nancy Mills and Laura Hutchins.

 

May 25:

New England Arts Assessment Consortium in Worchester, MA represented by NHAAE board members, Marcia McCaffrey and Laura Hutchins.

 

July 14 - 17:

Arts in Education Conference will be held at the NH Institute of Art Manchester, NH. NHAAE partners with NH State Council on the Arts, NH Dept. of Education, the Alliance for Arts Education of Northern NH, and the NH Humanities Council to present a statewide professional development conference to teachers, artists, administrators, parents and community members. NHAAE presented an information table and held a fundraiser. Much thanks goes out to Laura Hutchins for her tireless efforts on behalf of NHAAE. She also introduced keynote speaker, Tomie dePaola.

  • "TOMATO BOY" ON NHAAE WEBSITE!
    February 17th marked the debut of NHAAE's "TOMATO BOY" on our website homepage. "TOMATO BOY", as he is affectionately known to NHAAE members, starred in Public Service Advertisements broadcast in all regions of NH during 2003. Watch for spots airing on cable TV during 2004.

  • NH State Council on the Arts awarded NHAAE an Annual Advancement grant to promote arts education through its website.
    The Alliance has updated its website pages and is promoting the use of online resources and the
    "PRINCIPALS TOOL KIT" a valuable advocacy tool for arts educators. Please visit our pages

  • NHAAE's PSA Arts Advocacy Media Campaign is a current and on-going project to highlight the importance of the arts to NH's business community and to promote arts education. The radio and TV ad campaign was launched in January 2003.

January 24:
The 9th Annual Integrated Arts Conference was held at Silver Cultural Arts Center. We rang in the New Year by continuing to partner with Plymouth State University. This year, Mary Lee, Executive Director, NHAAE, exhibited the Alliance website, featured the PRINCIPALS' TOOLKIT, recruited members, and raised funds by selling NHAAE totebags. Janet Curcio-Wilson, NHAAE Board Member & Director of Professional Development, VSA arts of NH, presented the inspiring keynote speech and added her beautiful voice to advocate for arts for all learners.

February 2:
Martin Novom, Consultant, Alexis de Tocqueville Institute Martin was an invited guest speaker at NHAAE's February board meeting. April:
Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education and NHAAE are pleased to announce a scholarship award to Ellen Flanagan to join the Kennedy Center's National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC. Ellen will be spending summer at the 2004 Summer Institute. NHAAE's first partnership with KCAAEN and the NH Music Educators Association to find talent in NH's high schools found a high school student from Hanover. Thanks to Phil Martin, NHMEA Liaison to KCAAEN for our Alliance

April:
NH Dept. of Education and the Council of Chief State School Officers contract awarded for $7,500 to NHAAE to develop an Arts Resource Guide. This Resource Guide will be published in a CD-ROM format.

May:
Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education awarded NHAAE an $8,000 grant to develop an Arts Resource Kit. NHAAE plans to distribute this kit to arts educators and community members for use as an advocacy tool to strengthen arts programs. Information will include resources on research trends, standards, assessment, arts organizations and training programs, and a Guide for arts and educational contacts. NHAAE hopes to find business sponsors to help distribute the Kit. After initial distribution, the Arts Resource Kit will be available for purchase through our website.

July 13:
New Board Member Meredith Senter will attend the Concord Chamber of Commerce's monthly meeting and introduce NHAAE members Laura Hutchins and Mary Lee to the Chamber's benefits and activities.

July 15-18:
Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Leadership Conference, Washington, DC
Laura Hutchins, President, and Mary Lee, Executive Director, representing NHAAE, will attend this annual event. Theme for conference: "Arts Education: Mobilizing a Commitment to Action." This year's conference joins forces with national conference partners--Americans for the Arts and National Assembly of State Arts Agencies.

  • Laura Hutchins, NHAAE New President !!
    The Alliance welcomed aboard our new President at our April 12 Board Meeting. Laura continues to represent NHAAE as Advocacy Committee Member to the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network.
  • Mary Lee, Executive Director, NHAAE
    NHAAE would like to thank Board Members for helping to secure an award from NH Department of Education and CCSSO! Thanks to Grants Team Members Pat Garvin and Pat Wild for their help! Mary wrote the proposal to the NH Dept. of Education and Council of Chief State School Officers' to develop an Arts Resource Guide for the Integrated Learning Project. NHAAE was awarded the contract for this competitive request for proposal in April. Mary has joined the Advocacy Committee at the NH Citizens for the Arts and will work with NHCFA in advocating for the arts through raising public and governmental awareness of needs and issues facing arts organizations, arts education and artists.
  • Randy Armstrong, Councilor, NH State Council on the Arts
    Randy continues to play music and an active role in advancing the arts by serving as Councilor on the NH State Council on the Arts. He is monitoring the arts credits requirements for the State of New Hampshire. In October 2003, Randy presented and donated a music workshop to Franklin High School students at the Franklin Opera House. He learned that Franklin Schools were facing cuts to arts programs and wanted to contribute to arts education
  • Patricia Garvin, Board Member, has resigned her position on our board. Thanks to Pat for contributions to arts education as a member of the Grants Team. Her skills were invaluable in helping us secure grants from Kennedy Center Alliance for the Arts and the State Council on the Arts. The Alliance wishes Pat the very best in her future endeavors as Economic Development Specialist at NH Community Development Finance Authority.
  • Andrew Raeside, has stepped down as President of NHAAE. Thanks to Andrew for serving as President and helping to recruit board members, serving as liaison to the NH State Council on the Arts' Arts in Education Conference planning committee, and representing the Alliance at conferences around the state. Best to you as you continue as Arts Coordinator at Spaulding Youth Center, Tilton.
  • William Krause, Executive Director, Mill Pond Center for the Arts, and Treasurer, NHAAE
    WELCOME A-Board to Bill! Bill joined our board in December 2003.
  • Marcia McCaffrey, Arts Consultant, NH Department of Education
    Marcia has been monitoring and continues working on the proposed raising of the Minimum Standards for School Approval for Arts Credits with the DOE.

BOARD MEMBERS create ARTS NEWS:
* Randy Armstrong, Board Member, Appointed to NH State Council for the Arts.
Besides creating music for Randy Armstrong Trio and releasing a new CD, "NO REGRETS,"
Randy is playing an active role in advancing the arts by serving as a Councilor on the
NH State Council on the Arts.

* Candace Glickman, Miss NH 2003, was among the Top Ten candidates for the Miss America Pageant! Congratulations to Candace for running on the platform of integrating arts in education.

* Laura Hutchins, NHAAE Pres. Elect, named OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR by NH Art Educators Association. Laura's many talents involve: Art Educator at Newfound Regional High, Advocacy Committee Member to the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, member of the
2003-04 NH Scholastic Art Awards Program Advisory Board, and presenter of workshops on Critical Links arts education research.

* Janet Curcio Wilson, has created, designed and implemented The Inspired Learning Through the ARTS Professional Development Model for interdisciplinary arts. This year The Brentwood School in Merrimack, NH and The Epping Middle School 6th grade staff have been involved in arts workshops
and multiple intelligence training using this model. Janet is The Director of Professional Development

Arts in Education Conference was held in Jackson. NHAAE partnered with NH State Council for the Arts, NH Dept. of Education, the Alliance for Arts Education of Northern NH, and the NH Humanities Council to present a statewide professional development conference to teachers, artists, administrators, parents and community members. 250 people attended. NHAAE displayed its updated website & featured online info on the PRINCIPAL'S TOOLKIT, a resource for advocacy and arts. NHAAE board members, Laura Hutchins and Marcia McCaffrey, presented a workshop on "Critical Links," arts education research.


August 23:
NHAAE Board Retreat was held at Spaulding Youth Center. Ray Doughty, Arts Consultant, SC Alliance for Arts Education, was invited a second time to return to NH--to lead board members in a daylong workshop focussed on: board development , NHAAE Survey for Arts Educators, Board Recruitment Packet and developing unity of purpose. Anne Taylor, Executive Director, of VT Alliance for Arts Education was invited to provide guidance and resources. Thanks to Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network for providing funds for organizational development.

June 19:
Annual Meeting and H-arts Group Performance was held at Concord Community Music School. Board Members, students, and parents enjoyed music and dance performed by H-arts. This youth group was founded and directed by Board Member, Candace Glickman (Miss NH). Potluck dinner was delicious!

May 15:
NHAAE's Arts Education Leadership Forum: Partnerships through Shared Values & Visions Arts was held, in partnership with the NH Dept. of Education and the NH State Council on the Arts. Goals met: to inspire leadership, to work collaboratively, to involve students as partners and leaders, to learn about successful state partnership models, to generate ideas for partnerships and projects and to identify potential partners for projects.

Keynote speaker, Dr. William Preble, addressed school climate and arts integration. Mayor Robert Baines welcomed the Forum participants. Introductions were made by Nicholas Donahue, Commissioner of NH Dept. of Education; Marcia McCaffrey, NH Dept. of Education Arts Consultant; Candace Glickman, Miss NH; Karen Burgess-Smith, Academic Vice-President of NH Institute for Art; and Mary Lee, Executive Director, NHAAE. A panel of 5 arts leaders presented to participants. 50 administrators, artists and arts advocates brought back next steps to their schools, organizations and communities. The Forum was well received and arts advocacy networks formed for the future partnerships. A list of arts and educational organizations' mission statements were distributed to Forum participants.
Thanks to funds from the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network. Support was provided from: NH State Council on the Arts and the NH Dept. of Education.

April 10:
Arts Awareness Day & Breakfast with NH Legislators was held in partnership with NH Citizens for the Arts and many other educational and arts organizations from NH. Candace Glickman, NHAAE Board Member, directed her youth dance group, "H-arts" in a dance performance. Her talented students drew attention to the event, held at the NH Historical Society. NHAAE's new video ad to promote arts education, "TOMATO BOY" was first shown to the public.

March 15:
The 8th NH Young Writers Conference was held at Plymouth State College. Students and teachers met to discuss their poetry and fiction writing with a variety of professionals at this daylong event supported by our organization. Kate Donahue, NHAAE Board Member and Creative Writing Teacher at Plymouth Regional High, and Scott Hutchison, English Teacher at Gilford High, co-directors of the conference presented a stellar slate of keynote speaker and seminar leaders.

January 25:
The 8th Annual Integrated Arts Conference was held at Silver Cultural Arts Center. We rang in the New Year by continuing to partner with Plymouth State College. This year, board member Laura Hutchins presented a workshop, "Where Dreams Come True: The Transforming Power of the Visual Arts." She led participants on a journey through the recently published compendium of arts education research to discover how to become an effective advocate for arts in their schools and communities.


News from the year 2002 at NH Alliance with Arts Education:
* January 26:
We again partnered with Plymouth State College for the Integrated Arts Conference held at Silver Cultural Arts Center. Arts educators who attended the conference were delighted to view student sculptures that were contributed by Andrew Raeside, President of NHAAE. Andrew teaches art at Spaulding Youth Center.

* March 16:
We created a new partnership with the NH Young Writers Conference. The conference convened high school writers, English teachers, poets, journalists and authors for a day of sharing, learning, teaching and readings. NHAAE board member Kate Donahue, English teacher at Plymouth Regional High School, co-directed the event with Scott Hutchison, English Teacher at Gilford High School. Lunchtime entertainment was provided by holding a raffle, made possible by generous sponsors to the literary arts.

* May 7:
Annual Meeting & Concert was held at Kimball-Jenkins Community Art School, Concord. Members were entertained by a Special Guest Performance by board member and Musician, Randy Armstrong, who treated us to music from his new CD, No Regrets. Pot Luck desserts sweetened our evening.

* July 11-13:
Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Leadership Conference, Washington, DC provided an intensive training and orientation opportunity to Executive Director Mary Lee and Laura Hutchins (President-Elect). The conference theme was "A Critical Link to Student Success, " focusing on the new research compendium linking learning in the arts and academic achievement and social development. Laura and Mary visited the offices of Sen. Bob Smith and Sen. Judd Gregg to advocate for arts education. Kathi Levin, Director of Education, KCAAEN, delivered new grants application info to NHAAE. Mary and Laura met with Ray Doughty, KCAAEN National Governance Committee, to plan the August Strategic Planning Retreat.

* August 10:
NHAAE's Board of Directors attended a Strategic Planning Retreat at Newfound Regional High School. Facilitator Ray Doughty, Arts Consultant, So. Carolina, led a strategic planning workshop using the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education's Self-Assessment Kit. Board members prioritized goals and planned new projects for 2003: Ad campaign, Leadership Forum and Board development for fundraising. Board member Laura Hutchins planned the training site, found sponsors for refreshments and donated her own handcrafted door prizes.

* September 13-15:
The annual Arts in Education Conference, held at Eagle Mt. House in Jackson, provided NHAAE another opportunity to partner with NH State Council on the Arts, Alliance for Arts Education of Northern NH, NEA, NH Humanities Council, the Kennedy Center, NH Dept. of Education, and Lincoln Center Institute.
This event convened artists and educators to explore the power of arts to improve learning. This year's theme was "IMAGINE." NHAAE set up a table to display our website (www.nhaae.org) on a laptop. Arts educators previewed the Principals Tool Kit, an online resource for arts education. Mary Lee, NHAAE Executive Director, sold NHAAE T-shirts and recruited members. Thanks to board members Laura Hutchins, Michael Pelletier and Andrew Raeside, who donated items and time to help raise funds. Board members Randy Armstrong, Marcia McCaffrey Catherine O'Brian and Jeff Warner contributed time and effort to promote NHAAE to the arts community. Laura Hutchins and Marcia McCaffrey presented workshops on Arts Assessment and "Critical Links" (research on arts education, academic achievement and social skills).

* October 18-19:
At the annual NH Art Educators Association Conference, Board Member Laura Hutchins presented a workshop on the "Critical Links" research on arts education, academic achievement and social skills. "Critical Links" compendium is an important tool to support arts advocacy in your schools and communities.
